Project "Revive a Sunnah" Week 17

Week 17: January 26th-February 2nd 2007
(8th-15th of Muharram 1428 AH)

“Ohhhh my God! Did you hear what Sr. Fatima did?!”

“Dang bro, did you hear what Br. Salman did?!”

How quick we are to run to others and tell what our brother/sister in Islam did. Do we forget that sometimes we sin? How would we like it if someone spread our sins to everyone? Obviously, we would be both upset and embarrassed.

What did the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) advise us to do if and when we are exposed to a sin of our dear brother/sister in Islam? Should we go around telling everyone we know or should we remain silent and keep it to ourselves? Let’s take a look, insha Allah.

From the Ahadith:

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "A Muslim is a brother of (another) Muslim, he neither wrongs him nor does hand him over to one who does him wrong. If anyone fulfills his brother's needs, Allah will fulfill his needs; if one relieves a Muslim of his troubles, Allah will relieve his troubles on the Day of Resurrection; and if anyone covers up a Muslim (his sins), Allah will cover him up (his sins) on the Resurrection Day".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

While there are many different aspects and lessons we could extract from this Hadith, we will only focus on the aspect of “covering up your brother’s/sister’s sins.” Here, the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) is giving us a glad tiding that Allah will cover up our sins if we cover up the sins of our brothers/sisters. Isn’t that beautiful? I mean, really! Think about it. Not only are we upholding the welfare of our communities by covering each other’s mistakes, but we are also promised that Allah will cover up our sins and mistakes on the Day of Judgment. It’s an absolute win-win situation (if we satisfy the criteria). So, let us all satisfy the criteria together by reviving and implementing this beautiful hadith of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam).
