Project "Revive a Sunnah" Week 11

Week 11: December 15th-22nd 2006
(24th of Dhul Qa'dah-1st of Dhul Hijjah 1427 AH)

The sunnah to be revived this week is (at least in my opinion) one of the most abandoned sunnahs today. Even though it is explicitly stressed by the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) in the books of Ahadith, the majority of people still don't seem to practice it. The sunnah which I am talking about is "Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid."

What is "Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid"?
For those who may not know, it is the performance of two raka'hs upon entering the Masjid.

From the Ahadith:

1.
Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him)reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When anyone of you enters the mosque, he should perform two Rak`ah (of voluntary prayer) before sitting .''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

2.
Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to the Prophet (PBUH) when he was in the mosque, and he said to me, " Perform two Rak`ah prayer.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Unfortunatelly, when people come into the Masjid today, the first thing they do is sit down. If you are one of those who is accustomed to doing so, then please take heed and follow the Prophet's (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) instruction. If you are one of those who performs
"Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid," then please encourage your fellow Muslim brothers and sisters to do so.
