Project "Revive a Sunnah" Week 16

Week 16: January 19th-26th 2007
(1st-8th of Muharram 1428 AH)

Contrary to what some people may believe, Project “Revive a Sunnah” does not only address “bigger” issues of the Prophet’s (sal Alllahu alayhi wa sallam) sunnah. Rather, it addresses all actions related to the Prophetic sunnah which are not widely practiced. Why am I mentioning this? Because the sunnah which we will focus on this week is probably going to be viewed by some as a “minor” one. However, every action which the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) spoke of cannot be a “minor” one. It might be a “minor” one in our eyes, but the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) did not speak of his own desire, so it must be important…just something to keep in mind for the future, insha Allah.

Here’s a piece of advice: If you are mindful of Allah by trying to do as much as you can according to the way of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) in regards to the smaller things, then how do you think you will respond to the bigger things in Islam? Obviously, you will have no problem, insha Allah. So, look at these “minor” sunnahs as supporting pillars to the “major” sunnahs. Insha Allah, if you monitor yourself by having this this mind-set, then you will be able to get a feel of how you are doing with regards to your well-being in Islam. Try it. It works for me.

Having said that, let’s move on to this week’s sunnah to be revived. OK, I personally have seen this sunnah neglected left and right. Because it is such a “minor” thing, a lot of people neglect it (almost) unknowingly.

From the Ahadith:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When any of you puts on his shoes, he should put on the right one first; and when he takes them off, he should begin with the left. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

A very simple hadith that is straight to the point. Even though this hadith is specifically talking about putting on/taking off the shoes, insha Allah it can also be applied to other things, such as the wearing of gloves, for example. As I’ve already mentioned, this sunnah needs revival because you will see a lot of people who do the complete opposite of what the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed. Let’s revive all of the sunnahs of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) – be they little or big, and encourage others to do the same, bi idhnillah.

May Allah reward you all.
Praise be to Allah and may the blessings be upon the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam).
