Project "Revive a Sunnah" Week 14

Week 14: January 5th-12th 2007
(16th-23rd of Dhul Hijjah 1427 AH)

I was searching for the ahadith of this week's topic, when I came across an important social issue. It wasn't my initial intention to cover this topic, but after going over the corresponding ahadith, it was difficult to put it aside. This week's topic deals with something most of us have experienced. As you shall see, the ahadith attack a hideous practice some of us have. Let us mention the ahadith first.

From the Ahadith:

1.

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "In the presence of three people, two should not hold secret counsel, to the exclusion of the third .''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In Abu Dawud, Abu Salih related: I asked Ibn `Umar: "What if there are four people.'' He said, " There is no harm in that.''

2.

Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When three of you are together, two of you must not converse privately ignoring the third till the number increases, lest the third should be grieved .''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

It is a great sin to hurt our fellow Muslim brothers/sisters – physically, verbally, or psychologically. Sometimes we find ourselves in a group of three, with two of the members talking secretly or talking in their own language. Unfortunately, I've witnessed this countless times in our community. It doesn't only happen with three people, but sometimes there is a whole crowd who speak the same language plus one brother/sister who doesn't speak that language and the crowd just carries on conversing, with absolutely no attention being given to that lone brother/sister.

I've personally been in situations like this, and let me tell you – it is very unpleasant. Let's take the Prophet's (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) advice and have some common courtesy for our brothers/sisters. May Allah guide us all unto the Straight Path. Ameen.
